The Security Of The Church

“For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth. And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God. Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married. For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee.” | Isaiah 62: 1-5

When the apostle Paul, along with some Roman soldiers, was providentially found to be in the midst of a storm called “Euroclydon,” he gave this word of assurance to all those who were fearing for their lives… “sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.” (Acts 27: 25)

The Lord had promised Paul that he must stand before Caesar (Acts 27: 24) and the apostle, by the grace of God, rested in the Lord’s word.

There was no way that God’s word would fail.

Brethren, we’re all promised that our faith shall be tried, (James 1: 3) but may the Lord bring back to our minds His promise to each of His own… “I’ll never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

And by the grace of God, the Lord’s people believe that it shall be as it was told them.

GOOD NEWS FOR PILGRIMS!

“And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.” | Acts 27: 44

Here is good news for weary, heavy-hearted pilgrims from our homeland in Heaven.

Do you have heartaches and troubles too numerous to count? It will do you good to receive some good news from home.

The Lord our God is still on His throne. Our Savior is still in Heaven, preparing a place for you, representing you, interceding for you.

There are many in Heaven just like you and me already.

There is . . .
a fallen David there,
a doubting Thomas there,
an angry Moses there,
a feeble Philip there,
an impetuous Peter there, and
a righteous Lot there.

All are there by grace alone, through the merits of Christ’s blood and righteousness. And, soon, the Lord Jesus Christ will come again to take you there!

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14: 1-3)

From Heaven Through His Church

“The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.” | Isaiah 2: 1

In yesterday’s article, we saw that the Lord declared that in the last days of the Mosaic economy the Lord Jesus Christ would establish and exalt his church in a way that his people through the law could never do. Today, we see the second work the Lord Jesus performs in establishing and exalting his house.

The passage speaks of all nations flowing unto the Lord’s house. We read that many people, not just his elect from among the Jews, shall go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob. Also, note that it is the Lord who shall do the teaching; that he shall teach, not of man’s ways, but of his ways. The prophet says that when he teaches his people they will walk, not in the path of the little obstinate-stiff-necked hills, but in the Lord’s paths. All this is because the law and the word of the Lord are going forth out of Zion from the top of the mountains and out of his Jerusalem. (Jeremiah 23: 1-8)

After our Lord established and exalted his church by his life, his sacrifice and his ascension, God the Father gave him all power in heaven and in earth to send forth the gospel from heaven through his church on earth that he might rule in the midst of his enemies. (Psalm 110: 1-4; Matthew 28: 18-20; Colossians 1: 21-23) From his throne in the mountain of glory, Christ Jesus the Lord is now establishing his church by drawing his redeemed people from the north, the south, the east and the west; an elect people out of all nations.

From heavens Zion our victorious King Prophet is teaching his people through the local assemblies and pastors which he has established and raised up.

His people rejoice to hear of his way of electing grace, of establishing them complete in God’s presence in righteous judgment by his own wisdom, righteousness and holiness. They delight in his way of regenerating his spiritually dead children when he comes in power and grace to each of them; his way of preserving them by the word of his power and of faithfully fulfilling his every promise.

As he draws them to his house one-by-one, it is not a grand spectacle or something even noticed by the world of religion who reject the gospel for another jesus. Yet, by the work that he alone is performing, his elect, hear his voice from heaven through his church on earth and they follow him.

Christ has made the path free of all thorns of sin and stones of ignorance; they know he is the Way and therefore they walk in his path.

This is the second manner in which the Lord establishes and exalts his house above the insignificant hills of falsehood. (Jeremiah 51: 25-26; Micah 3: 9-12; 4: 1; Zechariah 8: 1-3)

Whosoever Will and God’s Election

“And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat. Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods; For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:” | Joshua 24: 13-17

Those who preach the election of God are often asked by those who don’t, “Why don’t you preach only to the elect?”

The simple answer is, “I don’t know who they are, but God does.”

That is why I am called to preach to “whosoever will hear,” to “whosoever will believe” and to “whosoever will come.”

God told Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

Therefore, we must conclude that “Whosoever will” is “Whosoever God wills.”

IT SHALL BE PERFECT

“And whosoever offereth a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD to accomplish his vow, or a freewill offering in beeves or sheep, it shall be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no blemish therein.” | Leviticus 22: 21

The voice from the cross did not summon men to do, but to be satisfied with what was done, “It is finished.”

The sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ is the only perfect thing which has ever been presented to God on man’s behalf.

“It shall be perfect to be accepted, there shall be no blemish therein.”

Christ is All and in All!

“Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.” | Colossians 3: 11

Unto you that believe, He is precious.

Believers receive Christ, rejoice in Christ, and to them He is precious.

His obedience is our righteousness, His blood is our atonement.

His prayers are our intercession.

His reign is our glory.

His coming is our hope!

Christ is all and in all!

In The Last Days

“The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills.” | Isaiah 2: 1

The Lord Jesus Christ alone must establish and exalt his house.

He has and he shall.

This is the word which came from the Lord God of covenant promise delivered by his messenger Isaiah. Christ’s church, made up of the small remnant of his elect in that physical nation Israel as well as his elect from the four corners of the earth, shall be established and raised.

In the last days that the Mosaic system of worship existed the Son of God was made of a woman, made under the law to redeem them that were under the law that we might receive the adoption of sons. (Galatians 4: 4, 5) Christ bought the remnant of his elect children who were natural descendants of Abraham out from the Mosaic law so that they now are free to approach God through Christ the Lamb rather than an earthly sacrifice by the law of commandments.

At the same time, for both his elect Gentiles and his remnant in national Israel, Christ judicially delivered them from sin and death earned by the first Adam in the garden.

By his holy person and his righteous obedience Christ established an everlasting righteousness which his people could never do for themselves. Being made sin for us, he who knew no sin satisfied God’s justice, reconciled us to God and established us before God.

When he was exalted to God’s right hand in resurrection glory his church was exalted in him. In the first place, this is what the word “established” and “exalted” means. Come back tomorrow and we will see the second thing it means.

“But Noah found Grace”

“And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” | Genesis 6: 5-8

Noah found grace, because grace found Noah.

God’s grace chose Noah. God’s grace sought Noah.

God’s grace called Noah.

God’s grace put Noah in the safe haven of God’s ark; and God’s grace covered him from the wrath that came because of his sin.

When Noah received God’s grace, he received God’s mercy, forgiveness, kindness and favor in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

To say that Noah found grace, is to say that Noah found Christ.

It is the same for every child of God. To find Christ is to find ALL; and sinners find Christ, when Christ finds the sinner.

“O to grace how great a debtor! daily I’m constrained to be!”

Eternally Beloved of the Lord

“We are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation.” | 2 Thessalonians 2: 13

If you are “beloved of the Lord,” you always were “beloved of the Lord.”

He did not begin to love you when you repented of sin and believed on Christ. God saw you in Christ in His eternal covenant and loved you then. That love for those “beloved of the Lord” was shown two thousand years ago when it pleased Him to bruise His Son for you.

Christ redeemed you not only before you were aware of His grace, but before you were born. There was nothing in you to merit His eternal, infinite, and unchangeable love.

On the contrary, you were His enemies, profaned His name, and even despised His mercy after you heard about it. “HEREIN IS LOVE, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and gave His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

Man Can Only Look Upon the Outward

“The Lord sees not as a man sees for man looks upon the outward appearance but the Lord looks upon the heart.” | 1 Samuel 16: 7

Preachers and other believers do not have such a spirit of discerning that they can determine who is a believer and who is not.

We know experimentally what true faith in Christ is in the internal exercises of it. Yet these graces we can neither feel nor see in the heart of someone else. Outward manifestations and appearances we can readily see, but the Word of God plainly states that this way of judging what is in a person is uncertain and liable to deceive, “He shall not judge after the sight of his eyes nor reprove after the hearing of his ears.” (Isaiah 11: 3)

Eyes and ears are poor judges and dangerous counselors in soul cases.

People who are quick in determining another person’s state before God betray one of three things:
1) they have little experience;
2) they are persons of weak understanding, or
3) they have great pride, self-confidence, and ignorance of themselves.

Wise and experienced believers will proceed with great caution in these matters.
