Grow In Grace

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To HIM be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” | 2 Peter 3: 18

The apostle’s exhortation to us as God’s people who have been called by faith to believe on Christ is, “grow in grace.” When God‘s people “grow in grace,” they grow in the doctrine of grace. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2: 8-9) They grow in the object of grace – which is Christ Himself! “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” (2 Timothy 1: 9) “Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 2: 1) And when God‘s people “grow in grace,” they grow in the practice of grace.

Psalm 111: 4 says, “…the Lord is gracious and full of compassion.” And all who “grow in grace” say, “As He is, I desire to be.” True growth in grace says with David, “I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with THY likeness.” (Psalm 17:15)

The doctrine! The object! The practice!

“Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To HIM be glory both now and for ever. Amen. (2 Peter 3: 17,18)

Come To Christ

Christ told us, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.” (John 7:37) And “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Isaiah prophesied “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”

ANY, ALL, and EVERY ONE; come thirsty, tired and burdened.

Come to Christ now, without any payment of your works, and enter into true rest!

The Lord God Will Come

The Lord sometimes, and perhaps not unfrequently, induces darkness, that His light may be more striking. He hedges up His people’s way with thorns, that the almighty hand, which removes them, may be more plainly seen.

Oh! it is blessed to be brought low, to be surrounded sometimes with difficulties, to see no way of escape, and all human resources fail, purposely that our extremity may be the Lord’s opportunity, and when we are most low, Jesus may be most exalted.

My soul, is it now even-tide in the soul, as it is eventide in the day? Art thou stripped, humbled, convinced of thy nothingness?

O look to all-precious, all-suitable Jesus.

Hear what the Lord saith: “When the poor and the needy seek for water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I, the Lord will hear them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. I will open rivers in dry places, and fountains in the midst of valleys.” (Isaiah 41: 17-18)… “At evening-time it shall be light.” (Zechariah 14: 7)

We Preach Christ Crucified

To make a thorough study of all that is wrong with man, all of the specific consequences of the fall, would be a considerable undertaking requiring great time and effort. Yet we know that unless the Lord opened our hearts and understanding to His truth, we would yet be entirely ignorant on the subject. But if God is pleased to just show us Christ crucified, one glimpse of the Son of God at Calvary, will make us to know what we are. The horror of what we are. And that same glimpse, of that same One, will reveal how God made right all that is wrong.

For the elect of God, all that we are and all that He is, is revealed at the cross. Our condemnation, and our sure hope, in one look. We preach Christ crucified.

Only Two Religions in the World

There are, really, only two religions in the world.

One of Cain and the other of Abel.
One is Ishmael and the other is Isaac.
One of Esau and the other of Jacob.
One of law and the other of promise.
One of Mount Sinai and the other of Mount Calvary.

One condemns, the other finds no fault.
One leads to bondage, the other to freedom.
One tendeth to death, the other to life.
One of weakness, the other of power.
One of merit, the other of mercy.
One of the weakness of the letter, the other of the power of the Spirit.

The Unsearchable Riches of Christ!

The song says:

“O, the unsearchable riches of Christ!
Precious, more precious than gold!”

Christ, Himself, is the riches.

When He gave Himself, He gave all the riches of heaven.

To have nothing but Him, is to have all. And to have everything without Him, is to have nothing.

And The Word Was God

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” | John 1: 14

My friends, if you will carefully consider it, this is the most extraordinary fact ever declared in human language. God became a man and “took upon him the likeness of sinful flesh.” The Ancient of Days became an infant of days. The Son of the Most-High God became a man of sorrows. He made the world; but as a man, “he had no place to lay his head.” He who made the rivers asked a woman to give him a drink of water. He who cast out devils was tempted of the devil, and the author of life died and lay in a tomb.

“The sun that hid from Him its face
By His own hand was hung in space;
The sky which darkened o’er His head
By Him above the world was spread;
The spear that shed His precious blood
Was tempered in the fires of God;
The grave in which His form was laid
Was hewn in rocks His hand had made.”

Blessed Assurance

Assurance of salvation and a saving interest in our Lord Jesus is NOT A FEELING cultivated by thinking good thoughts and doing good deeds. Paul calls it “full assurance of faith.” (Hebrews 10: 22)

It has to do with faith, with BELIEVING GOD!

Assurance is born of CONFIDENCE IN THE FATHER as our covenant God; “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.”

Assurance is born of CONFIDENCE IN THE SON as our just God and Saviour; “By His stripes we are healed.”

Assurance is born of CONFIDENCE IN HIS PROMISES; “Abraham was fully persuaded that what God had promised, He was able also to perform.”

So your assurance of redemption is not enhanced by the MORE YOU WORK, but by the MORE YOU TRUST AND REST IN HIM. “Let us labor therefore to enter into THAT REST” (Hebrews 4: 11).

Done, Done, Done

Had God but laid the foundations, and left it unto us to complete the superstructure, He had as well done nothing. But “done, done, done,” is replete with joy; it leaves me nothing else to do than sing my thankfulness. He has not merely put me in a salvable condition but saved me — not merely made reconciliation a possibility but reconciled me unto Himself — not merely put me on a road that leads to heaven but guaranteed my reaching there.

He would be a fool for his presumption, who should call all to hear what had only been commenced by God, but was dependent for completion on his own exertions, but he on the other hand is a traitor to his Father’s glory, who holds his peace concerning what his God has done.

A religion of the two letters, DO, can never be a religion of song, but a religion of the four letters, DONE, is a religion that need never want its accompaniment of praise. See to it then, that in salvation’s anthem this note of divine completeness ring loud and clear.

Grow In Grace

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To HIM be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” | 2 Peter 3:18

The apostle’s exhortation to us as God’s people who have been called by faith to believe on Christ is, “grow in grace.” When God‘s people “grow in grace,” they grow in the doctrine of grace.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” | Ephesians 2: 8-9

They grow in the object of grace – which is Christ Himself! “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” | 2 Timothy 1: 9

“Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” | 2 Timothy 2: 1

And when God‘s people “grow in grace,” they grow in the practice of grace.

Psalm 111: 4 says, “…the Lord is gracious and full of compassion.” And all who “grow in grace” say, “As He is, I desire to be.” True growth in grace says with David, “I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with THY likeness.” | Psalm 17: 15
