Power To Cross Our Path

And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.” | Acts 8: 26

In absolute power God moves his messenger and his vessel of mercy so that they meet right where God would have them meet.

There were two roads which Philip could have taken. Yet, through the Spirit the Lord commanded Philip to go south on the road which went down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This was the desert road. The phrase “go toward the south” has an alternate meaning in the Greek which means “at midday.” So in power the Holy Spirit of God, literally, moved his messenger to take the road least traveled, at the time of day when it was least likely to be traveled, to meet the most unlikely person, an Ethiopian eunuch.

The Lord’s elect may be wandering lost in the most remote places on this globe but the Lord who saves in power knows exactly where they are. We may have to be led away from the religion of the day out onto old Gaza Road, as was the Ethiopian eunuch, but God is able.

God our Savior, the King of heaven and earth, shall bring the good news of his Son to each of his children in his time in his power.

Why Hath The Lord Done Thus?

How sweet it is to awake every day knowing that God my Savior is on his throne, that he has purposed all that the day shall bring forth, and that he has purposed it for me, for my everlasting good.

The Declaration of Dependence

“In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.” | Psalm 62: 7

Sooner could the ocean prove too little for a small fish or the sky be too small for a swallow than the grace of God prove insufficient for one of God’s people.

Not all their weaknesses, failures or sins can use it up.

Straight Gate, Wide Gate

“Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.” | Matthew 7: 24

The Rock, of course, is Christ; the sand is self.

But the test, the mark, the evidence, the proof of the two builders and the two buildings is the hearing of Christ’s sayings and doing them, or the hearing of Christ’s saying and doing them not.

We may twist and wriggle under such a text, and try all manner of explanations to parry off its keen, cutting edge; we may fly to arguments and deductions drawn from the doctrines of grace to shelter ourselves from its heavy stroke, and seek to prove that the Lord was there preaching the law and not the gospel, and that we are saved by Christ’s blood and righteousness, and not by our own obedience or our good works, either before or after calling, all such tests and all such texts are inapplicable to our state as believers.

But after all our questionings and cavilings, our nice subtle arguments to quiet conscience and patch up a false peace, there the words of the Lord stand, and what is more, will stand forever, backed as they are by that solemn declaration from the same Lips of Eternal Truth: “Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 7: 19-21)

Abide Here Fast By My Maidens

“Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens:” | Ruth 2: 8

Sheep are social creatures.

They need the flock. If a sheep is found alone it is because it is sick or wounded.

Ruth wanted the flock. She said to Naomi, “thy people shall be my people.” Believers need the church.

I am suspicious of folk who talk about joining a church because they feel like they can help it out.

The church is a hospital for sinners. It is a well for the thirsty. It is a breadbox for the hungry. It is sought out, entered, and resided in because of need.

Believers don’t attend to help, they come to get help.

If providence has made you hungry, providence will guide you to the place where the bread is. What of those who believe grace but cannot seem to be part of an assembly? I have no answer, but I’ve never known one who has the joy of true and lasting fellowship who is not in the house of God, with the people of God worshipping the true and living God. There is where the sheep gather in one fold with one shepherd.

The church is not an organization; it is an organism. It is not a business; it is a family. It is not a building; it is a body. Nothing is more detrimental to the heart and spirit of a believer than neglect of God’s house. (Haggai 1: 4-6)

Two things are found to be true concerning the members of the churches of God: Every member is a believer, and every member has confessed Christ in baptism.

Only Sinners Saved by Grace

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” | Ephesians 2: 8

In Christ there is no great and small, no important and unimportant, but only sinners saved by the grace of God.

We are all brethren!

The servant is not greater than his Lord; and if the Lord humbled himself to become a servant, shall we not do likewise?

Happy are those who know this gracious truth by experience and perform the doing of it.

Witness of the Scripture

“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. I receive not honour from men. But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?” | John 5: 39-44

The Lord Saves Sinners.

Our Lord is both WILLING to save sinners and ABLE to save them.

If He is willing but not able, we have no hope; if He is able but not willing, the result is the same.

But if He is both willing and able to save by His perfect sin-offering, there is no reason for me to despair.

The World Judged At The Cross

“Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save. Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.” | Mark 15: 31-32

A wonderful, prayerful resolve would be; Lord, let me look into the glorious glass of Thy Word and see the face of the Lord Jesus Christ, and let me conformed to His blessed image in all things.

Let me see Christ in all Thy Word.

Let me look to Him and look like Him.

Deliver me from this present evil world, deliver me from the god of this world, deliver me from my sinful self, and receive me into Thy Kingdom forever.

Let me be resolved to seek Thy will and do Thy will always.

DO YOU LOVE GOD’S SALVATION?

“Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, let God be magnified” | Psalm 70: 4

Every believer can truly identify and say with David, that we love the salvation that God has abundantly, eternally and sovereignly given to the poor and needy sinner in and through the Lord Jesus Christ.

There is no doubt that everyone is in need of salvation, (Romans 3: 23) but few seem to have any real interest. The warning of scripture is, “how shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?” (Hebrews 2: 3) Why does the true believer love the salvation of God? Let me give you several scriptural reasons:

1). We love God’s salvation because of the experience of it in the heart. This salvation is not only a perfect work accomplished for us at Calvary with His justifying blood atonement, it is also a work of God the Holy Spirit making application to the sinner’s heart. (John 16: 8-15) Salvation that is revealed in scripture is an experience of the grace of God revealing Christ to the heart. (Philippians 1: 6)

2). We love God’s salvation because of the method of it. (1 Peter 3: 18) The method of this salvation was devised, implemented and executed by God Almighty. It is the way of sovereign grace through the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus Christ who satisfied the demands of God’s justice and supplied every need for the guilty sinner. (Philippians 4: 19)

3). We love God’s salvation because of the sureness of it. (Romans 4: 16) We run no risk when we trust the eternal we lfare of our soul upon Jesus Christ the Righteous; it is truly a safe salvation. (Psalm 62: 6-8) He guarantees and gives eternal life to all those who believe on His name. (John 3: 36)

4). We love God’s salvation because of the completeness of it. (Colossians 2: 9-10) Nothing remains unfinished or lacking. God’s salvation is not waiting upon the sinner to add something to make it complete or effectual. Only that which God provided will be accepted. (Genesis 22: 8) Sin is put away, (Hebrews 9: 26) redemption is accomplished, (Hebrews 9: 12) righteousness is established (Philippians 3: 7-9) and reconciliation is achieved. (2 Corinthians 5: 18)

5). We love God’s salvation because of the Person of it. (1 John 5: 10-12) Jesus Christ Himself is the sum, substance and subject matter of the gospel. (Romans 1: 1-3) “He is altogether Lovely.” (Song of Solomon 5: 16) Salvation is not in a profession, place nor a position but rather in a glorious Person. Surely, anyone who does not love this salvation must be a lover of self, and a hater of the God of all grace. (1 Peter 5: 10)

Surely, those who love God’s salvation can say, “let God be magnified.” (1 Corinthians 1: 30-31)

The Just Shall Live By Faith

“And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.” | Genesis 15: 6

While it is true that all for whom Christ died cannot become unsaved, and the Holy Spirit will never leave one who is born of Him; every believer feels the worst thing that could happen to him is to be left to himself.

This is what led David to make this cry, “Cast me not away from Thy presence: and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.” (Psalm 51: 11) David felt as though he deserved to be cast away from God’s presence, but he could not bear the thought. He felt as though he deserved to have the Holy Spirit leave him, but he could not endure the thought of being left alone!

Cain went out from the presence of the Lord because he did not want to be in His presence.

But the believer must have His presence and His Spirit.

There is no life without this. Whether we feel this or do not feel this, we always realize this.

We cannot be left to ourselves!
